Equine-Assisted Therapy

Our Equine-Assisted Therapy sessions take place in a tranquil outdoor setting, where a small herd of donkeys live freely on a track system designed to support their natural behaviours. These gentle, intuitive animals lead contented lives, and their calming energy offers an invitation to slow down, breathe, and connect—with yourself and the world around you.

Why Donkeys?

Donkeys are deeply grounding animals. Their calm, steady nature helps soothe the nervous system and invite us into stillness. Just being in their presence can evoke a sense of peace and ease. As herd and prey animals, donkeys are highly attuned to subtle shifts in body language and emotional energy—a skill essential to their survival in the wild. They naturally and intuitively pick up on how we are feeling and respond without judgment or agenda. They reflect back to us what we bring into the space, offering an honest and authentic mirror that can deepen self-awareness and insight.

What to Expect

We begin with a brief grounding exercise to help you to settle into the space—tuning into your body, releasing tension and quieting the mind. You will be supported to explore at your own pace, gently guided by the donkeys and your facilitator. While traditional therapy often explores the past, equine-assisted therapy focuses on the here and now. By working with the donkeys, clients are encouraged to stay present and develop greater self-awareness, while also identifying practical steps to create meaningful and positive change in their lives

Some of the practices may include:

  • Mindful brushing or leading of a donkey
  • Quiet observation and simply being in the donkey’s presence
  • Somatic (body-based) awareness
  • Reflective and therapeutic dialogue to process insights as they emerge

A core focus is presence and connection—with the donkeys, your facilitator, and with yourself. Sessions are client-led, meaning we work with what arises for you in the moment. The donkeys, in turn, may respond in ways that shape how the session unfolds.

Some of the benefits of Equine-Assisted Therapy

  • Nervous System Regulation: Nature, stillness, and the presence of donkeys combine to settle the nervous system and promote a sense of safety and calm.
  • Increased Self-Awareness: Through the donkey’s authentic responses and somatic (body-based) practices, you can gain clarity around your thoughts, emotions, and habitual patterns.
  • Empowerment and Clarity: Gentle facilitation supports you in identifying what you need, and exploring the first steps toward change.
  • Authenticity and Connection: In a space free from judgment, you can rediscover your own authenticity and deepen your relationship with yourself, and with others.

A Safe and Supportive Space

As your facilitator, I am a certified practitioner of Equine-Assisted Therapy. I am here to ensure your safety, gently guide the process, and hold space with care and presence. Sessions are co-created - led by what you bring into the space, and shaped by the wisdom of the donkeys. Whether you are seeking grounding, clarity, personal growth, or simply a break from the busyness of life, these sessions offer a unique opportunity to reconnect—with nature, with animals, and with your own inner wisdom.
